Masonic Magazines

updated 15 October 2009

Are you one of those Masons who can't get enough Masonic news? If so, you needn't limit yourself to your lodge's bulletin. There are several Masonic magazines to help keep you in the loop with your brethren across the globe. We've reviewed some of them, including ratings to let you know what to expect in terms of the quality of specific areas of content.

If you know of any magazines which are missing, please contact the author of this page.

Special thanks to Larissa P. Watkins, assistant librarian at the House of the Temple in Washington, DC, for citing this page in her book, American Masonic Periodicals, 1811–2001 (Oak Knoll Press, 2003), as well as in her article in vol. 11 (2003) of Heredom: The Journal of the Scottish Rite Research Society.

Philalethes, A Review of Masonic Arts & Letters
USA, quarterly
$50 for 1 year in USA

Editor:
Shawn Eyer

The Philalethes Society was founded in 1928 in order to disseminate Masonic light. The society at first supplied articles to other publications, but then in 1946 began to offer its own publication, which quickly established itself as the leading independent Masonic magazine of North America. For over 60 years, the Philalethes journal of Masonic research has served the Fraternity with insightful and important articles on every kind of Masonic topic.

Philalethes has recently been completely redesigned: each issue is now 44 pages in length (up from 24) and will feature a greater emphasis on scholarly work, symbolism and philosophy.

The Journal of the Masonic Society
USA, quarterly
$39 for 1 year in USA

Editor:
Christopher Hodapp

JTMS began publication in 2008. According to The Masonic Society, JTMS "presents articles that enlighten our past, and explore solutions to the challenges facing Freemasonry today." We find that its pages provide an attractive home for articles about Masonic history, events, philosophy, ritual and artwork. In the first year of its existence, JTMS published Masonic research by many recognized authors, such as: Mark Tabbert, Yasha Beresiner, Leon Zeldis, S. Brent Morris, and California's own John L. Cooper and Shawn Eyer.

The Scottish Rite Journal, published from 1903–1989 as The New Age Magazine, is the official organ of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, USA. The SRJ offers articles related to Masonry, philosophy, history, education, health and general public interest. Each issue is introduced by Ronald A. Seale 33°, the Sovereign Grand Commander.

There are many features of this magazine which make it suitable reading for any Mason, not just Scottish Rite members. Nearly half of the articles printed during the last few years deal with Masonry as a whole. One of the regular features is a book review section by Jim Tresner 33°. Bro∴ Tresner is a true scholar of Freemasonry in all of its aspects, and his reviews are consistently timely and interesting.

Current and past issues of the SRJ (dating back to 1999) are available online free of charge.

Freemasonry Today
UK, Bimonthly

Editor:
Michael Baigent

Freemasonry Today began two decades ago as an independant and is now the official magazine of the United Grand Lodge of England. Each issue features several full-length articles on Masonic history, as well as substantial Masonic news. The focus is mostly on the United Kingdom, however Masonic news from around the world is also presented.

Masonic research, which is growing in the UK and around the world, is featured in every issue. Also featured are excellent book reviews. This magazine at once familiarizes us with English Freemasonry as well as provides an ever-wider perspective into various "mysteries" of Masonic history.

Subscriptions are free to members of UGLE-affiliated lodges living in the UK. All others are able to read the magazine for free, including back issues for the last ten years, at their website.
