Masonic Formation in Second Life: A Virtual Masonic World

Second Life is a 3D virtual world that exists on the Internet. Freemasons gather there at a place called Blazing Star Masonic Island (BSMI). This is a free-floating section of Second Life set aside for Masonic education, Masonic formation, socializing and creativity. The island is the primary "hub" for Masons in the virtual environment of Second Life.

A virtual Masonic Temple rests majestically atop the highest hill on the island--affectionately dubbed Pike's Peak. Blazing Star Masonic Temple is not so much a temple as a museum. Its spacious galleries contain major exhibits about Masonic tracing boards, aprons and other Masonic artwork. Unlike a website, visitors here may meet and discuss the works being viewed. Lectures are also given at the Temple at least once a month.

There are many other things to see on the island. UGLE's Internet Lodge No. 9659 has an "embassy" on the island. Other residents have built a replica Templar castle, a renaissance-style labyrinth, Masonic shops, and more.

  • Blazing Star Masonic Island - A website featuring previews of the island and a blog with the latest news about Masonry in Second Life.
  • Second Life - Visit here to download the free software to use Second Life. It only works with DSL or cable connections, and requires a fairly recent (powerful) computer to run well.
